Chocolate Smoothie
You are going to love this Healthy Chocolate Smoothie recipe because it is thick, creamy, and chocolatey! Banana and chocolate make an amazing combination in this protein smoothie. Easy to make, just blend all the ingredients in your blender, pour and enjoy! Even the kids will love this smoothie!
My favourite smoothies involve chocolate and banana. It is such a delicious flavour combination, but it is totally healthy for you. Using frozen ripe bananas adds sweetness and thickness. But the cacao powder adds a nice chocolatey flavour. It is also full of nutrition. And, if you use chocolate protein powder you can have double the chocolatey goodness. If not, you can add another tablespoon of cacao powder, or just leave it to one tablespoon for a more subtle chocolate flavour.
How Do You Thicken a Chocolate Smoothie?
- Use frozen fruit. Using frozen fruit should add enough thickness on its own in a smoothie if you add enough. But, if you add too much and it’s too thick, just add more liquid. It’s all about finding the perfect ratio.
- Add protein powder. I find that adding protein powder adds a thicker and smoother consistency to the smoothie which I love. It can also add more delicious flavour and help to mask any unwanted flavours in a smoothie such as greens and veggies.
- Ice. If all else, adding ice will always add to a thicker smoothie and help keep your smoothie cold. I find there is enough frozen fruit in this recipe that it doesn’t need any ice at all, but if you want it thicker just add in an extra ice cube or two.
How do you make a Chocolate Smoothie?
Super simple! Just blend the following ingredients up in your blender:
- 1 frozen banana
- 1/4 cup frozen butternut squash
- 1 tbsp raw cacao powder
- 1 tbsp ground flax
- 1 cup of milk of choice
- 1 scoop of chocolate protein powder
Pour into a glass and enjoy! Give this recipe a try for breakfast or as a refreshing afternoon treat!
Breakdown of Ingredients
- Banana: adds thickness and sweetness to the smoothie, and is rich in nutrients.
- Butternut Squash: I always try to add a veggie to my smoothie as they are a great source of fibre and nutrients but you can’t taste them in smoothies!
- Raw cacao powder: is rich in flavonoids which are said to help lower blood pressure, improve blood flow to the brain and heart, and aid in preventing blood clots. Plus, it adds a great chocolatey flavour!
- Ground flax: high in fibre and omega-3 fatty acids
- Milk: stick to plant-based milk if vegan or dairy free. I like oat or almond milk in mine. This is the liquid that makes the smoothie creamy and smooth.
- Protein Powder: protein helps to build muscle, repair tissue, and make enzymes and hormones. It can also add extra flavour to the smoothie. Again, stick to vegan if you are vegan.
