In this Fried Rice recipe, simple ingredients come together to make a flavourful dish everyone will love. Eat on its own as a meal or as a side to compliment your Chinese entrees.

This makes for a great easy weeknight meal! This Fried Rice recipe is complete with scrambled eggs, bacon, peas, and green onions. It receives a delicious dose of flavouring from the bacon, plus a wee bit of soy sauce at the end.

What is the Secret to Good Fried Rice?

  1. Use jasmine rice. I find using jasmine rice brings out the best outcome every time. If you try different rice, you may need a different quantity of water and cook time to bring out soft and fluffy rice.
  2. Use that leftover bacon fat as the oil to fry up your rice. This gives amazing flavour to the rice. Just be sure there are at least 2 tablespoons on the bottom of your hot pan or you may need to add extra oil to be sure your rice doesn’t stick.
  3. Be sure you are using a big enough pan. A large frying pan or wok should do the trick to cook all the ingredients together, but if your pan is too small the rice may not cook as well, and you might have a mess trying to cook all of the ingredients in a too-small pan.
  4. Don’t overdo the soy sauce. I find 3 tablespoons is the perfect amount to season the dish. If you add too much it could be overpowering and also result in mushy rice. Also, if someone isn’t a fan of soy sauce you could always season your own individual plate of fried rice with soy sauce to your own liking, rather than to the whole dish so everyone is happy.

What Gives Fried Rices its Flavour?

There are a couple of different ways that make fried rice taste just right. The most important sauce to add is soy sauce. This adds a unique flavour to the rice, but it can be easy to go overboard. Make sure you add only a small amount and taste the rice to fit your preference. The recipe calls for 3 tablespoons which I find is the perfect amount.

The second way I add flavour is with bacon. Bacon adds the best flavour to the dish and frying the rice in the leftover bacon grease is the secret to really adding in that bacon flavour.

What are the Ingredients to Make Fried Rice?

  • Bacon
  • Water
  • Jasmine Rice
  • Frozen Peas
  • Eggs
  • Green Onions
  • Soy Sauce

How do you Make Simple Fried Rice?

Start by frying up 5 slices of bacon in a large skillet. The bacon adds such great flavour to this recipe. Once cooked and crispy, remove bacon to paper towels to drain. Do not rinse or wipe out the pan! There should be at least 2 tablespoons of bacon grease left, if not add some vegetable oil.

Then add 1 cup of jasmine rice to the pan and fry for 5 minutes stirring occasionally. When rice is golden brown add 2 cups of water and 3/4 cups of peas, and stir. Cover, reduce heat to low and allow to cook for approximately 12-15 minutes.

Meanwhile, scramble three eggs in a separate skillet. Then dice up cooled bacon.

When rice is done add scrambled eggs, diced bacon and a couple of sliced green onions. Add 3 tablespoons soy sauce, stir and serve.

And there you have it: a simple yet flavourful dinner the whole family will love. Serve on its own or accompanied by your favourite Chinese entrees such as these Air Fryer Chicken Balls with Sweet n Sour Sauce or this Sweet n Sour Chicken.

Note: You can add in more vegetables or a mixed veggie rather than just peas for added nutrition.

You can also add cooked chicken pieces for extra protein or substitute them for the bacon. However, I find the bacon adds great flavour to the recipe.

  1. This sounds delicious. Never thought of using bacon in fried rice. I usually use leftover ham. But bacon makes everything taste so much better. I will try this. Thanks.
