Perfect Basic Burgers
Summer is just around the corner and that means it is bbq season! I love homemade burgers and I have the perfect basic burger recipe that will satisfy your taste buds.
Perfect Basic Burger Ingredients
This beef burger recipe requires the following ingredients:
- Egg: needed to bind all the ingredients together
- Salt & Pepper: to season the burgers
- Mustard: for flavour
- Ketchup: for flavour
- Worcestshire Sauce: for flavour
- Fine dry breadcrumbs: helps to give the patties a lighter more tender texture
- Minced onion: for flavour
- Ground beef: for classic juicy beef burgers
Perfect Basic Burgers
You can grill these burgers or fry them up. Whichever you choose, you will want to preheat your method of choice. I usually grill the burgers when it is nice outside because I feel it makes them taste the best but frying them up in a pan or griddle will do just the trick as well. I had to fry these ones on the griddle because sadly we are in need of a new bbq grill right now.
To make the burger patties start by whisking one large egg with 1/4 tsp black pepper into a medium bowl. Then place 1/2 cup of fine dry breadcrumbs, 1 teaspoon of mustard, 1 tablespoon of ketchup, 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce, and 1/2 minced onion into the bowl along with 1 lb of cold ground beef. Mix it all up until well blended. I like to get messy and just mix with my hands but you can certainly just mix with a spoon.
Form into patties using your hands or a burger press. Makes about 6-8 patties depending on how big you make them. I like using about 1/2 cup per burger. If you are not cooking them right away, place them in the refrigerator until ready.
Now just cook them up using your method of choice. Add cheese near the end of cooking time if you prefer cheeseburgers.
How to Cook Burgers
Whichever method you choose season both sides of the burgers liberally with salt before cooking.
BBQ: to barbecue the burgers, which is my favourite method, heat your grill to high. Lightly brush the burgers with oil on each side and grill the burgers until golden brown and slightly charred on the first side, about 3 minutes. Flip over the burgers, and cook for about another 4 minutes or until the internal temperature reaches 77°C/ 170°F.
Stovetop: Preheat a cast-iron skillet or stainless steel frying pan over medium-high heat. Optional: you can toast the buns before cooking up the burgers by buttering the insides of the buns and placing the buttered side down in the hot pan for about 1-2 minutes, until golden brown and toasted. Set aside.
Swirl a pat of butter in the pan and place your burgers in the pan, leaving a little space in between each. You may need to cook in batches. Cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side until the internal temperature reaches 77°C/170°F.
Once cooked place on a bun and assemble as desired. There are so many ways to assemble the perfect burger. Have a number of choices around and let your guests choose. My favourite toppings are as follows: mayo, lettuce, tomato, and bacon! How do you assemble your burger? Answer in the comments below 🙂
Burgers are such a versatile dinner to make because there are so many options to serve them with. Some ideas are green salad, mac salad, potato salad, corn on the cob, grilled veggies, fries, and baked beans. With so many different options you can eat these all summer long. Enjoy!
Note: You can also make ahead and freeze the burger patties. Just put parchment paper in between the layers and place them in a freezer bag or container. No need to thaw when you are ready to cook just cook them as usual, but may need to increase the cooking time.

Recipe Notes
Raw patties freeze well, just place parchment paper between them. Take out just before cooking, no need to thaw out first. May need to increase cook time.
