Today I am sharing a favourite family recipe- butter tarts! These Super Easy Butter Tarts are absolutely scrumptious. We make them every year for Christmas and are always the first to go on a tray of goodies. They are also very simple to make- the hardest part is waiting for them to cool before indulging in a delicious gooey bite.

Butter Tarts are a quintessential treat in Canadian cuisine. This particular recipe has raisins and walnuts but you can alter it to your own liking. I use ready-to-bake tart shells which are thin so I get a lot more filling per bite which I love. However, you can use any tart shells or even make them homemade.

Super Easy Butter Tarts Instructions

Get your oven ready and set it to 375° F.

Place tart shells on a baking sheet and drop a few raisins in each one. I use 3 in each, although you could add more or just omit them if you prefer. Or if you like raisins, but also have picky eaters you could add raisins in some and omit them in others. Having individual tart shells makes it easy to provide for everyone, just be sure to remember which ones are which.

Now to make the filling. Start by adding 3 eggs, 1 cup packed brown sugar, a pinch of salt, 1/2 cup golden corn syrup, 1/4 cup melted margarine or butter, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract into a blender. Blend until smooth and that’s it..you have your filling.

Pour filling on top of the raisin in each tart shell.  No need to transfer your filling as your blender should make it easy to pour. Sprinkle some finely chopped walnuts on top of each for an added touch and flavour. Or you could use pecans if you would rather. And they are ready for the oven.

Place in your preheated oven for 15-20 minutes. You will see the batter rise a bit and puff up which is normal and will fall as it cools. Cool completely before indulging in these ooey gooey Super Easy Butter Tarts, which I know is the hardest part of this recipe!

Butter tarts freeze well so you can make them ahead of the holidays to lighten the load during that busy time. Frozen butter tarts also make a great gift. I would often give a big container or tray of frozen goodies to my Grandpa for his Christmas gift, as he is always hard to buy for but these Butter Tarts along with an array of cookies and bars were just the perfect gift for him.

  1. I like butter tarts but sometimes find them too sweet. These seem like the perfect size, plus I love the idea of some crunchy nuts to go with the gooey filling!

    1. Thats true they are very sweet, so yes the nuts definitely help balance the sweetness, and you could always add more nuts as well 🙂
