Five simple ingredients—sugar, butter, vanilla, milk, and salt—come together in a homemade frosting recipe that is rich and creamy.
Place 1 cup of unsalted room temperature butter into a mixer bowl. Beat on medium speed for about 2 minutes to get it nice and fluffy.
Add 4 cups of sifted icing sugar adding in 2 batches(so 2 cups at a time) on low speed. Add in an 1/8th teaspoon of salt. Then add 1/4 cup of milk or cream and 2 and 1/2 teaspoons of vanilla extract.
Increase to high speed and continue to mix for 3 minutes. Frost cooled cake or cupcakes as desired.
Makes about 5 cups of frosting, which is enough for a 9x13 inch cake, 8 or 9 inch layer cake, bundt cake, or up to 24 modestly frosted cupcakes.
